They are sometimes fairly broad. You can also use adduser to add it static.. see .help adduser :)
As for ident.. it only works if you actually bind it.. and even when you do bind it if you "/msg bot ident password" it will only work if you are somewhat close to a stored host. If you attach your handle at the end tho it should work
