Most webhosters allow shell access to there server these days.

Many don't see the advantage, but it's a very handy tool, when the FTP isn't good enough.

However, just because they provide shell access, it doesn't mean you can run an eggdrop.

The word shell, refers to the text based interface, than enables you to access commands, files and other items from a remote computer, via a screen, that pretty much looks like a normal terminal session, used directly on the computer.

People assume that shell automaticly assume that you can used eggdrop on it.

As such, I would seriously check the discription of the account you have been provided with, then read the T&C's, and AUP's of the provider.

If in doubt, don't.

NOTE: Don't simply attempt to run eggdrop, to test if the provider allows it. As there AUP's and T&C's may well allow them to terminate access to your web, and/or account, without any warning, refund or explanation.

There are a few posts on the forum, about people complaining there account has been disabled, due to running eggdrop on web-hosters systems.

1 such post, was about the developer of a site running it. A company had hired a developer, who designed the site, and vanished without trace. There hosting account was suspended, becuase the developer decided to run a eggdrop. The provided did re-instate access, after some mess of trying to explain the situation.
Statistics: Posted by ppslim — Wed Jan 22, 2003 6:57 am
