You pretty much already said it. :) you should check what ident demon is running the shell and change it that way.

I'm running an eggdrop from a slackware 12.0 machine. Everything works fine, but there's one thing that bugs me. I can't change the bots ident, it stays 1001, whatever I do.

set username "test"
I edit this setting, but it still doesn't help.
