Files randomly deleted on reboot/ shutdown

Ok sometimes when I reboot by server (FreeBSD) the chan file or user file would end up corrupted and I would have to use the ~bk up file it creates.. it also deletes trivia scores...

Is this because im rebooting or shutting down when file is busy saving changes or something? even happens during power outage.
