Some providers, delegate your IP block to your nameserver. Most likely by reading the documentation that came with whichever particular DNS server was installed. Google would be a good place to start. Vhosts are just aliases to dns. The real magic is done at the hardware level (ifconfig'ing multiple ip's to the same ethernet card.) I'll refer you to the relevant bsd documentation for that, since I do not know of any bsd howto's like there are for linux.
